Tournament  2011

Very many thanks to the parents and helpers that made this, our Sixth, tournament the best so far !

Last weekend saw well over 1800 players aged 6-18, representing 230 teams from Kent, Sussex, Surrey and South London (including 41 Girls squads) travel to Southborough to participate in Ridgewaye FC's seventh annual summer football tournament.

The tournament again proved extremely attractive due to its structure whereby the event splits at halfway with the stronger teams competing for the title of Champions with the rest playing for a Shield, and is now widely regarded as one of the leading summer tournaments in the region.  The club was also delighted to be able to welcome Southborough Deputy Mayor, Nicholas Blackwell, to present some of the awards.

Friendly format – under 6 to under 8s

In an amendment to the original rules we shall be adopting the format encouraged by the Crowborough League & used this tournament season to great effect in a number of events, whereby goal kicks can be taken anywhere in the penalty box and to give a chance for the defending team to clear their area, when a goal kick is being taken the other side must all return to their own half of the pitch until the kick has been taken.

In addition, at Under 8s in an attempt to ensure that all teams play at least one game at the appropriate standard, the fifth/final match will be between the teams that finished in the same position in the next group i.e. 5th Group A v 5th Group B, 4th v 4th etc. Consequently, results will be collected (but not displayed).

7 teams

This will be run on a round robin format. Each team will play the others once so that there will be 6 group games per team. In an amendment to the General Rules, these games will be 5 minutes each way rather than 6. The top two teams in League will contest the Championship Final, with the third & fourth playing the Shield Final.

*When teams are level on points, the order is based on goal difference, goals scored, the result of the league game between them & if still level then the toss of a coin.

8 teams

2 groups of 4 played in round robin, group matches lasting 6 minutes each way. Top 2 teams from each group go into Champions Group, 3rd & 4th go into Shield Group. Both the Champions Group & Shield Group also played on round robin basis with teams carrying forward result from first group stage i.e. If Winner of A beat Runner Up of A & Winner & Runner up of B drew then before 2 teams from A play the 2 teams from B, the Winner of A will top the group with 3 points, the two teams from B will have 1 point each & the runner up from A will have 0 points.

Top two teams in second group stage then play the Final.

*When teams are level on points see above.

10 teams

2 groups of 5 played in round robin. Top 2 teams go into Champions semi-finals & those coming 3rd & 4th go into Shield semi-finals.

*When teams are level on points see above.

12 teams

2 groups of 6 played in round robin with the teams coming fifth & sixth after Group stage being eliminated. Top 2 teams go into Champions semi-finals & those coming 3rd & 4th go into Shield semi-finals. Group & knockout games will be either 5 or 6 minutes each way & will be confirmed on the day.

*When teams are level on points see above.

18 teams

3 groups of 6 played in round robin. The bottom two teams in each group are eliminated. The remaining 12 teams are ranked 1-12 with teams 1-4 playing Championship semi-finals & teams 5-12 playing Shield quarter-finals. Ranking is based on group positions so teams 1-3 will be the group winners, teams 4-6 the runners up, 7-9 those that come third & 10-12 the fourth placed teams, with the order based on points, goal difference, goals scored & then the toss of a coin. Consequently, semi-finalists of the Championship, for example, will be the 3 group winners plus the highest points-scoring runner up. The Tournament Committee reserve the right to amend the Shield rankings by one spot in order to ensure that teams do not play quarter-finals against one of their group opponents. Group games will be 5 minutes each way.

*When teams are level on points see above.

20 teams

4 groups of 5 played in round robin. Top 2 teams go into Champions semi-finals & those coming 3rd & 4th go into Shield semi-finals.

*When teams are level on points see above.

24-28 teams

4 groups of 6 or 7 played in round robin. Top 2 teams go into Champions quarter-finals & those coming 3rd & 4th go into Shield quarter-finals. Teams coming fifth, sixth & seventh after Group stage are eliminated and all Group games are 5 minutes each way. *When teams are level on points see above.

PLEASE NOTE: At U12-U15 goal kicks from the goal line & from hand goalkeepers can only THROW the ball. U16 & U18 goalkeepers can ONLY throw the ball.

Finally, if withdrawals mean that there is a need to amend the original fixture lists and/or format, fresh schedules will be handed out by Control. Please bear with us in such circumstances as we will try to limit the number of games lost.
