Ridgewaye Ravens 1 Uckfield 2

Ridgewaye played fine team football for long stretches but were edged out in a keenly fought game against one of its title rivals.  For Uckfield this was sweet revenge for the 2-1 defeat inflicted by Ridgewaye in December’s reverse fixture.

The visitors took the lead in the fourth minute and had further chances only to be denied by some excellent defending and goalkeeping, including a superb tip over by Robert from a point blank header.  Ridgewaye held on and were able to get back in the game and cause Uckfield problems with its passing game.  The equaliser came halfway through the second half when George B. reacted quickest to an unfortunate fumble by the Uckfield keeper.  Ridgewaye looked to have the momentum but Uckfield responded well and struck a coolly taken goal with ten minutes remaining.  Ridgewaye still leads the table but no longer controls its own destiny as its rivals have what could prove to be crucial games in hand.

Pembury Athletic Colts           (1) 1

Ridgewaye Rangers               (0) 1

Played at the Woodside Recreation Ground, Pembury.

Team

Owen Worsell; Toby Francis (c), Wills Figg, Alex Doyle, Sam Field; Oskar Hayward, Leo Broadhead, Ben Jaquin, Connor Jordan, Gareth Thomas, Charlie Dodd; Josh Wapshott and Scott Beasley.

A good game for the Rangers as with the previous week. Rangers showed good shape and played good passing football. Owen was in goal for Sisko Dowler who was unavailable and Charlie, Alex and Gareth rejoined the squad replacing James Wood.  We started strongly with Scott being very unlucky to push his shot just wide after Ben put him through after 2 minutes.  The game flowed with both sides playing football and keeping to the spirit of the game.  Rangers conceded after 15 minutes despite heroic efforts to clear the ball. There was no question of the team losing heart, the spine of the team: Scott, Leo, Alex and Wills encouraged and showed determination that ensured nobody lost heart.  Connor, Scott, Leo and Oscar had goal bound shots but none troubled the Pembury ‘keeper.  Toby and Sam played well as full backs, linking with their respective wingers and defending well from wide.

In the second half Rangers attacked repeatedly.  Gareth improved through the half, with his attacking play on the left.  At one stage Owen tipped the ball round the post when Rangers had over-committed in attack. His save was one a top class keeper would have been proud of, giving away a corner rather than letting the ball bounce back into play towards the onrushing strikers.  Connor had a second chance which produced a fine save from the ‘keeper, then Ben came off feeling unwell.  With just over 10 minutes left the reward came, Scott controlled the ball and coolly scored our equaliser.  The last ten minutes was end to end stuff with both sides striving for a winner, Charlie came closest, but the ball bounced higher than anticipated when he was set to score.

Man of the match: Scott.  This was not for his goal, but because he never gave up and ran for the team for the whole match.

Raw Skills (0) 0 Ridgewaye Rangers (3) 4

Team: Sisko; Toby(c), Wills, James, Sam; Oskar, Leo, Ben, Connor; Josh and Scott.

Ridgewaye Rangers gained their first points since November with a deserved win in Edenbridge.  Man-of-the-match Josh scored the first goal after 10 minutes to settle the boys down.  It came from fine play on the right wing and a perceptive pass from Oskar.  For the second goal Oskar swept in a loose ball after several shots had been blocked from Scott and Connor.  Ben got the third with an accurate shot from wide when he noticed that the Raw Skills keeper was slightly out of position.  The game was played around the Raw Skills penalty area showcasing Rangers’ passing football.  Scott led the line and troubled the home defence with his power and pace.

In the second half Rangers tired as injuries had robbed them of their substitutes. But still they came forward for Ben to get his second.  The defence: Toby, Wills, James and Sam, with Leo in front protected Sisko’s goal.  The only time the ball went past Sisko, Toby, the captain, made a goal-line clearance.  Raw Skills did not have all their best players available, but you can only beat the players you play against.
